- Plug-in support. Will you want to add on effects such as pitch correction and auto-tune, surround sound or stereo expanders? If so, make sure that the software supports third party plug-ins formats such as DirectX or VST.
- Effects. Does the program offer the MIDI and audio effects you will require? For example, can you shift the pitch of your singing, or add reverb to your recordings?
- Views. There are many different ways of viewing and editing your data. In addition to the regular notation window, look for a piano roll (graphical view), event list (MIDI data), arranger/overview (move large chunks of music at once) and event controllers (graphically adjust MIDI data such as volume)
- Customization. Can you create and save your own view settings? Can you customize menus and create shortcut keys? Can you automate commonly used procedures ?
