Music Publisher 6 is a professional quality music notation software system for all 32-bit Windows platforms. Focused entirely on the printed page it is above all a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get visual system. The philosophy of Music Publisher 6 is that it is simply a replacement for pencil and paper. If you want a particular effect on your score which "breaks" the rules of music then Music Publisher 6 will not argue! Above all it produces the notation you want to see and does not impose its own rules. But of course, if you request it then it will help with advice and operations such as Neatening and various Tidying tools.
But if you regard yourself as more of a musician than a computer person, then don't be afraid that Music Publisher 6 is going to be hard going because there is a great amount of assistance within the program. And in any case once registered you are entitled to unlimited support both with the program itself and of course with getting it installed and running. You can get help by email, phone or mail.
Music Publisher 6 Scanning Edition has the same features as the Standard Edition but also has the ability to take input from your scanner rather than typing in the music. Unlike most music software scanning packages it is seamlessly integrated into the Music Publisher system and does not need you to run other software. Just put some printed music on your scanner and you can capture the notation straight into the package.
The Scanning Edition is identical to the Standard Edition except that it also contains routines enabling you to put existing printed music on your scanner and have it recognized and displayed on your Music Publisher screen just as if you had typed it in Music Publisher the long way. Unlike many music software scanning packages it is fully integrated into the Music Publisher system and makes your operation much simpler.
The technical term for this process is Music Optical Character Recognition (OCR). This process can deal with
- Staves in 2 sizes, normal and cue-sized.
- Clefs including old-fashioned F clefs (reversed type)
- Key signatures
- Time signatures
- Barlines including repeat bars, double bars
- Notes (including grace notes, beams, cross-stave beams, accents and all you would expect it to)
- Accidentals
- Slurs (including ties and phrase marks)
- Lyrics and chord names - and the latter will transpose if you transpose the music later on.
OCR is an operation which asks the computer to do things it's not best at. So this process may possibly result in the very occasional object which is not recognized. Now some music OCR software will make confusing alterations to compensate - such as moving barlines - but Music Publisher's Scanning will simply leave a gap in the music so that it is very simple to see what's missing. And of course being an editing system it's also very easy to correct afterwards.
