Picking has always been an individual thing. Guitarist have been told that “picking is up to us”, “that it is an individual thing” and “to find your own way to do it”. If you look around at all of the guitarists that are playing, you are going to see some pretty individual picking styles. Some of these have benefits and some have serious drawbacks.
What this program has done is to analyze the job of picking. This course provides a superior approach to the job of picking on the guitar.
Some of you have been playing for a long time and you’ve probably already developed a comfortable way of holding the pick. This will not try to change what you are already successfully doing. However, this program will make suggestions that over a period of time, you can begin to incorporate into your own style of picking that will improve what you are doing. Not only that but a lot of the aspects of what they talk about you will be able to do immediately. So no matter how you are holding the pick now, or what you are doing, you are going to benefit and improve by being involved in this project.
When you buy tablature for music or licks, etc. you have all kinds of information except what picking stroke that you should use. All of that is going to be over for you, from this project, you are going to know how to pick everything that you need to pick.
You will be able to accomplish picking every single note if you want to. That is not always advisable or musical but guitarists need to be able to do it. Also, for example, if you are a jazz or fusion player, and you want to take a great saxophone solo and transcribe it for the guitar, you are going to find yourself into some pretty bizarre picking situations.
Why do guitarists need to be able to pick every note? That is so they have the choice of articulation. There may be a section of the music that you want to sound very percussive, you want it to just pop right off of the guitar, you want it to be very powerful and that is going to be with the pick. Also the ability to be able to pick everything if you want, means that you are no longer locked into hammers and pull-offs on everything that you do, which is going to give you that ghosted sound, and the swallowed sound in your lines.
So the ability to pick is going to be important. It won’t matter the type of guitar or strings you pick up, your technique will be able to handle it all. For example, if you are playing with others on an acoustic guitar and it comes time for you to solo, and you are locked into doing a lot of hammers and pull-offs in your picking style, your notes aren’t going to be coming out. If you are able to pick every note easily, you would be able to play as fast as you want and all of the notes would be coming out evenly.
It’s a matter of choices and being able to do the right thing at the right time. Being able to pick every note gives you that ability.
A Clear Vision Of The Fingerings
Learning your fingerings is key. It is only through the fingerings that you know where you are. Those have to be mastered first.
You have to understand the rules before you can break the rules. In Guitar Magic Visualizing Musicality, you learn about playing in position. Playing in position gives you a clear vision of the fingerings, where you are on the fretboard, and provides the visual framework for completely understanding the relationship of notes to chords, keys, harmony, to one another etc. Then when you start to apply the arpeggio style of picking, and you are looking for the most convenient way for the right hand to maneuver itself through the in-position fingerings, then you can reconfigure the fingerings. Slow Everything Down To Your Level
With tempo control, the program gives you the ability to slow everything down to your level, and then slowly speed things up until you can play each musical example as it should be played. To be able to slow a lick down and then methodically build it up is the best way to learn a lick or musical example. There is no other method of demonstration that will let you learn like this. There is not a better way to develop a superior technique then the midi demonstration in the program. This is because you can slow the example down until it is learned and internalized. It thoroughly covers picking from basic to advanced topics, such as arranging your fingering patterns to optimize them for the right hand, when to use specific picking techniques and how to integrate them when approaching different musical scenarios. It also provides complete coverage of rhythm picking. Both courses provide detailed examples and in-depth exercises for all lessons.
GM - Picking & Rhythm expands upon the fingerings from Guitar Magic's Visualizing Musicality system and uses the same terminology, providing a consistent "language" for the instrument. To cover the subject of picking as it should be covered, it is taught as a completely separate courseware system .
What Should I Get First? Guitar Magic or the Picking & Rhythm Course?
Because it provides music theory, covers more subjects, and uses terminology that is expanded upon in the Picking & Rhythm course, you may want to start with Guitar Magic. However, Guitar Magic isn't a prerequisite for the Picking & Rhythm course. While it does expand upon the terminology with regard to finger patterns introduced in the Visualizing Musicality system, it was designed to be used either as a stand-alone course or in conjunction with Guitar Magic.
So - these two courseware systems cover different topics. It really just depends upon where you want to put your focus. If you want to learn fundamentals, focus on theory (basic or advanced), and understand the guitar better then purchase Guitar Magic.
