Connect a MIDI keyboard to your computer to record directly to your computer or to learn to play the piano! Most MIDI controllers don't include built in sounds. Instead, they rely on your computer to provide the sound - either with your built in soundcard, or with a soft synth. You can also connect a MIDI sound module to a controller via the MIDI Out connection. By relying on an external source for sounds, MIDI controllers are generally less expensive than a regular keyboard, plus you get the added flexibility of upgrading your sounds without have to get a new keyboard!
Apart from the obvious ability to enter notes with a keyboard, a MIDI controller can also offer control over any number of other parameters by using knobs, dials or buttons. Many controllers will allow you to start and stop recording and playback directly from the control surface, remix levels during automation or control effects such as reverb or distortion. This tactile experience can offer a number of advantages to trying to affect the same control using your mouse. |
