You will be able to record from any input on your soundcard or from your internal CD-ROM drive. You can also edit sound files already on your computer.

• Burning Support.  Almost all Audio Editing and Master programs support some form of CD burning.  If you don't have another program for burning CDs or DVDs, is the built in one good enough?  Does it support error-free red book encoding?  Do you need DVD audio support?
• File Types. Work with MP3 files?  How about OGG Voribs or WMA?  Most editors will accept many of the major sound file formats such as wav, mp3, aif, snd, au, raw, etc. This may also include opening one file type and saving as another. Be sure the software you buy will work with all the file types you regularly use.
• Built in Features.  Standard tools usually include cut, copy, paste, amplify, basic reverbs, EQ, and various filters. Do you need to time or pitch stretch?  If so, will the built in features be enough, or will you require a stand alone program or plug-in.  Know what you want to be able to do and what to expect from the software.
• Plug-ins. Do you want to go beyond the boundaries of the included editing tools? Plug-ins can greatly expand the power of the program. Does the program support the plug-in format you will want to use?
