Sibelius 5 Announced.
Sibelius has announced that Version 5 of their flagship notation software will be shipping at the end of June. As expected, VST and Audio Unit support is now included, which means you can use any VST or AU virtual instrument for playback in Sibelius! In addition to allowing you to use any third party sound library, Sibelius is also including Kontakt Player 2 with 2GB of sounds. The mixer has also been updated to make working with various sound libraries even easier.

Of course, if you have worked with virtual instruments and sample libraries, you've probably spent a fair amount of time fiddling with various settings to achieve the dynamics or articulations you want. To save you the time, Sibelius has released two new Sound Libraries that integrate directly into Sibelius to avoid all of the hassles! In addition to the existing GPO and Rock & Pop Collection, Sibelius has added World Music and Choral libraries for use with Sibelius.

Another cool feature is the "Ideas Hub" which is basically a database of musical ideas. There are 2000 "ideas" included, and you can easily add your own - just select the music in Sibelius, and tap a key to store it in the Ideas Hub. You can label it, tag it and even color code it to make it easy to find in the future. In fact, you can browse or search by keyword tags, instrument, time signature, key and more. You can play it back, insert it in your music, or export to send to other people. This is a great tool for composers and teachers, since Sibelius marks where ideas are used in the score.

Panorama is another major new feature. Now in addition to the page layout view, Sibelius offers a scroll view that shows your music scrolling across the screen - a feature supported by most other notation programs for a while now.

There are a number of productivity enhancements as well, including automatic cues in parts, undoable plug-ins, and more advanced page layout controls. Mac users will be glad to know that Sibelius 5 is now Universal Binary.

The only disappointing news is that the upgrades need to be purchased directly from Sibelius, so if you already own Sibelius, you will need to contact them for the upgrade. Otherwise, if you don't already own Sibelius, you can purchase it from Kelly's Music!

Update: If you want to purchase the Sibelius upgrade and can send us a School Purchase Order, we can provide it for you! Contact us for details.
