RME TotalMix Update
RME's Fireface 800 just got better! With new 2.0 drivers, you can now control RME's "TotalMix" routing and mixing software for the FireFace using any hardware controller surface that supports the Mackie Control, including Tascam's US-2400.
While you could always use compatible software, such as Sonar or Cubase with hardware control surfaces, these programs don't interact directly with your soundcard. Instead, they adjust the levels and routing internally. When you have a basic set up and don't need patch bay functionality, this works just fine. However, RME's very popular TotalMix allows you to directly access the Fireface, allowing much more control and support for features such as talkback and various surround configurations. Providing direct access to the soundcard through MIDI is a great idea and hopefully other companies will take note.

PowerCore PCI is back!
TC Electronics has returned the PCI version of their PowerCore series to the line-up. Joining the PowerCore Compact and PowerCore Firewire (both connect to your PC via Firewire), the PowerCore PCI MKII is a revamped version of the original PowerCore PCI. The new PowerCore PCI MKII includes the same plug-ins and power as the PowerCore Firewire, but in a half-size PCI card.
The PowerCore series not only unloads some of the strain from your CPU when running audio plug-ins, but it also features some of the best sounding plug-ins available. Many are reproductions of high-end TC gear costing thousands of dollars. In addition, add-on plug-ins are available at a fraction of the cost of the hardware. For example, the MD-3 STEREO MASTERING plug-in is based on TC's well known System 6000. Of course, TC also gains a built in copy protection mechanism for their plug-ins since they require the PowerCore to run. You can't blame them for wanting to protect their investment, especially when you consider how much the plug-in version is saving you compared to the hardware!
