Tascam DR-1 Portable Digital Recorder |

The TASCAM DR-1 is a late entrant in the portable digital recorder field, but Tascam has taken the opportunity to pack it full of features! The built-in stereo microphones include a unique variable angle mechanism, so you can set it to record from any angle. The DR-1 is the first portable recorder to include a 1GB card, so you'll have plenty of CD or MP3-quality recording time for long rehearsals and concerts. Unique features such as overdubbing, a built in tuner and vocal cancelling technology set the DR-1 apart from other digital recorders.
It is a bit bigger than the R-09 or MicroTrack, but it also includes a user removable rechargeable li-on battery, so you can easily replace it should the need arise. (Anyone with an iPod that won't hold it's charge knows what I mean! |

Portable digital recorders such as the DR-1 are a great way to easily start your recording process. You can drag and drop your files onto your computer for easy editing, but don't forget about the importance of a good pair of monitors. Fortunately, good monitors are less and less expensive, so you can afford to get the best results possible.
The new VL series from Tascam is an affordable line of accurate monitors that are perfect for any home studio. Check out the VL-A4, VL-A5 and VL-A8 if you are looking for great sounding speakers.

Izotope RX |

I had the chance to spend some time with Izotope's RX audio restoration software at MusikMesse in Frankfurt last month and was very impressed with how advanced audio restoration software has become.
RX iincludes the usual noise removal tools such as a hum removal and declicker, but even those show impressive flexilibity, such as a manual declicker mode. When combined with the unique spectrogram display, you can easily find intermittent noises and completely remove them. The software can actual "rebuild" the audio - you would never know it was there! This amazing (almost magical?) ability to rebuild and repair audio shines through in the declipper, which can remove analogue and digital overload distortion, and in the spectral repair module. The spectral repair fills in gaps in audio and can even account for changes in pitch, vibrato and harmonics.
If you are looking for an automated, easy to use, "press one button and go" type of audio restoration software, then RX isn't your best choice. However, if you have noise you need to remove, and want the best results possible, RX is an amazing tool that I can highly recommend.

Sibelius Student Edition |

Siibelius Student Edition is a "lite" version of Sibelius, and was recently updated with many of the features found in Sibelius 5. For example, the ideas hub with 250 ideas has been added, along with panorama view and support for Sibelius 5 files. Despite the name, Sibelius Student Edition is ideal for anyone who needs a notation program, and doesn't need to pay for features like part extraction found in the full Sibelius 5.
If you start with Sibelius Student Edition and decide to upgrade to Sibelius 5 later, you can always purchase the Sibelius 5 Competitive Crossgrade. | |
