Sonar Home Studio 4 is the next version of Cakewalk Home Studio Version. An entry-level recording program, Sonar Home Studio is based on Cakewalk's powerful Sonar application. Affectionately viewed as "Garage Band" for PCs, Home Studio has been around much longer and arguably has many more features.
Sonar Home Studio provides you with everything you need to start recording on your PC. In addition to the ability to record, edit, mix and arrange music, you can also work with Acid loops and virtual instruments. Rewire support means that you can use Home Studio in conjunction with other programs such as Project, Kinetic, Reason or Live.
This version is actually based on the Sonar 4 audio engine and adds a number of features. One of the biggest changes, however, is the new interface. Taking a page from the GarageBand book, Home Studio's interface has been revamped in attempt to simplify and streamline the interface for new users. If you are new to home recording, the new interface of Home Studio will likely appeal to you with its easy to understand menus, buttons and even new icons to visually represent your tracks.
Home Studio has always been a great value. Now that they've based the core features on Sonar 4, it is an even better value since you are essentially getting "Pro" performance for a fraction of the price! As for the interface, we think it's a great idea. Serious recording musicians will probably find it annoying, but then again they should be using Sonar instead. For anyone getting started, the new navigation makes the program less intimidating. If you are a PC user who secretly envies your friend's Mac with GarageBand, this is your chance to be glad you own a PC! Despite it's looks, Home Studio is still a powerful program for the price.
