Manufacturer: MAGIX ENTERTAINMENT
Platform: Win

Sequoia draws upon years of co-operation with experienced producers and sound engineers to tackle every challenge faced by modern professional recording studios. Besides a wide array of proven recording and editing tools, Sequoia also offers outstanding editing and crossfade functionality. It also includes intuitive source/destination cutting, excellent marker setup, and an efficient crossfade editor with which all crossfade parameters can be edited in real-time.

Sequoia needs no special DSP or audio hardware and works natively on host CPUs. The program can run on a laptop just as well as it does on a PC plugged into the studio. That means you can transfer your projects to mobile workstations - or anywhere else, for that matter. You remain completely independent until the project is completed while enjoying those possibilities normally only offered by a fully equipped studio: multi-track recording, professional cutting, high-end effects (such as the real-time space simulator or sound restoration tools), a complete digital mixer, real-time CD/DVD burning functionality and much, much more.

Sequoia was designed for the requirements of modern, effective teamworking. Within a network, multiple users can work simultaneously with the software. The integrated administration functions permit the assignment of individual rights of access and program configurations.

For years, Sequoia has been an integral part of leading broadcast and mastering studios worldwide, including the BBC, German public broadcasters WDR and MDR, Radio Bremen, the Viennese Symphonic Library and Sterling Sound in New York. For sound engineers, music producers, radio journalists or cutters, Sequoia is an indispensable tool for any type of professional media production. Registered users enjoy professional service, customer-oriented support, an exclusive forum and free support.

Complete solution

Sequoia offers everything that a digital audio work station requires: Recording, mixing, editing mastering - in fact everything up to and including the burning of manufactured Red Book-compatible audio CDs/DVDs. You can of course also carry out DVD productions in the standard 24 bit with up to 192 kHz. The feature set allows a complete In-the-Box-Work, from composing with MIDI and VSTi up to the final CD/DVD in one software:

- Low-Latency-Audio-Engine,
- VST*- and DirectX-Plugins
- automatic latency compensation in the complete signal flow,
- external remote control
- realtime room simulator with convolution

Unique Object-oriented Editing

As an enhancement to the traditional concept of mixer-supported editing of complete tracks, all versions offer countless possibilities for direct real-time sample editing. Recorded audio tracks can thus be cut into as many objects as you wish.

Every object can be edited with individual fades and effects, such as Equalizer, Timestretching, Pitchshifting or plugins. Sequoia also offers Aux-Sends on the object level, the well-known linearphase mastering effects, and a widely variable signal flow.
First Class Effect Setups

From mixing to mastering, all production needs are met: Award-winning equalizers, various dynamic processors, Timestretching, Pitchshifting, Reverb and Delay, plus the high-end mastering effects: Multi-tape compressor, Multi-band stereo enhancer, FFT filter with over 30,000 bands, Amp Simulator, Vocoder, room simulator with folding principle, Denoiser (utilizing the noiseprint method) and Dehisser for real-time noise reduction. Besides routing possibilities for all effects that allow a freely configurable signal flow, these possibilities are not only available to the object level, but also in each mixer channel.
Further features: improved solo effects, unlimited routable busses and Aux-send busses, VST and DirectX plugin support, flexible routing of all integrated and plugin object effects and mixer channel effects.

Burning CDs/DVDs

It couldn't be easier: Red Book-compatible audio CDs/DVDs can be burnt on-the-fly from the arrangement, without having to take any destructive intermediary steps. The continuously updated support makes sure that even the latest models burn perfectly with Sequoia.

Multitrack Recorder

Sequoia allows you to play and record up to 999 tracks simultaneously in synch with either a video or a film. Everything is synchronized perfectly with the sample. You can assign all physical inputs and outputs independent of the audio hardware used. Between 24 and 128 physical I/Os are currently possible, and not only on the studio desktop - the latest laptops offer the same possibilities with suitable audio hardware.

100 Per Cent Sound Neutral

One of the strongest features of Sequoia is absolute sound neutrality comparable to high-end consoles. The sound always remains full and transparent while retaining depth.

Highly developed digital algorithms, absolute phase stability and constant use of floating point resolution ensures that the sound retains subtle nuances - even after the most intensive digital editing. That means transparency, neutrality and the retention of transience and spatiality.

Different audio formats from 16 to 32 bits and sample rates of up to 192 kHz can be employed in the same arrangement.

Sequoia is purely native PC software and therefore independent of proprietary audio hardware. Basically, that means the program works just as well on a laptop as on an audio workstation with dozens of inputs and outputs.
You are free to choose your own system. With MME, ASIO* and WDM, Sequoia supports all the most relevant PC driver models. Hardware Independent, you can simply pre-produce your interviews on a laptop and then complete them later using a studio system.

Arranger Window

The most important working area is the VIP arranger. It's here where tracks are recorded, cut, edited, crossfaded and finally organized for the final CD. VIP stands for "virtual project" - as represented by the file name endings of saved projects.

VIP stands for "virtual project" as represented by the file name endings of saved projects. As the name implies, everything here is virtual. Therefore all settings such as a Fade In or a complete crossfade will not be calculated into the recorded material. This modus operandi allows complete editing freedom. Every single step can be modified in any way or simply undone, without causing irreparable damage to the valuable recording.

Mixer

The Sequoia mixer comes with a large function palette. 64 Submix- and Aux-Busses, variable signal flow in every channel, snapshots, automatic latency compensation for plugins and much more.

Flexible operations: Operating can be made entirely by keystroke, with countless shortcut options available. Mouse wheels for all control values are supported.

Automation and optical Setups: The mixer offers dynamic volume and pan automation with curve resolutions that are true to the original sample. There's also static total recall presets for all mixer settings. Four optical setups for track organization can be stored as snapshots. It’s possible to hide sections (Auxes, Inserts, EQ, Input).

Auto-Select-Track: The display keeps up with the currently selected track, making it possible, for example, for the mixer to be reduced to one channel and for all settings to be applied to the one track.

Track order: The sequence of the mixer channels can be changed via drag & drop. Please note however that (to avoid feedbacks) the output routing can only take place from succeeding tracks and busses.

Manager

The Managers combine frequently required management and control functions within one window, such as for markers, tracks and CD tracks.

This includes a File Browser for finding, previewing and loading media files. The Managers can be opened from within or outside of the main window without blocking it. The Manager window is multi-monitor enabled and saves the last position when closing. You can open several Managers simultaneously and independent of each other in different views.

Editing

The strength of the Sequoia/Samplitude family lie in the countless audio editing functions they offer to meet all your editing needs.

Apart from virtual editing with professional features, special value was placed during development upon detailed, controllable crossfades and CD Pre-Mastering. In addition, a particularly flexible option - shortcuts for all important procedures. The basic principle: Sequoia adapts to the user's way of working - not the other way around!

Object Editor

At the heart of working object-oriented is the Object Editor. Not only for every single object, but for several at a time, it can act as a tool.

The Object Editor, displayed here in MAX Mode is divided into three horizontal segments: Object Effects (the Object Effects window), Position/Fades (the Position/Fades window), and Pitchshifting/Timestretching (the Pitchshifting/Timestretching window). It can always remain open, which allows a very quick way of working: One mouse-click on an Object and the Object Editor displays all properties and editing possibilities for this Object. It’s recommended that you keep the Object Editor open outside of the main window on a separate monitor.

For example, you can assign certain plug-ins and a different EQ setting to one Object that differs from all other Objects within the same track. You can also fade in an Object softly, or change a pitch if it is not correct (in this case the tone needs only to be separated as an individual Object or by using Elastic Audio Editor).

MIDI

Double-clicking on a MIDI Object in the project opens the MIDI Editor. Alternatively, the Editor can also be started for the selected MIDI Object by clicking on the "MIDI Editor" command in the "MIDI" menu.

If no MIDI Object is selected, a window appears which lets you create an Object at the playback position. You can then choose between a menu of pre-defined MIDI templates from within the Sequoia "Templates" sub-menu.

Sequoia offers extensive MIDI functions. You can import, record as well as play back MIDI and also edit the MIDI data with several internal MIDI editors. The data is presented as an object (or objects) in the arrangement tracks. There are a wide variety methods for synchronizing to external programs or devices. The MIDI controller automation is based on formats such as MIDI Clock, MTC (MIDI Time Code) and SMPTE.

MIDI object editing is performed in the same manner as with audio objects. MIDI objects can be copied, divided, lengthened and trimmed. Every MIDI object possesses its own properties that can be edited in the MIDI Object Editor. Here, all adjustments also take place virtually - the original Midi file remains unchanged. The following can be changed:

- Position/Length
- Beat
- Fade In/Out
- Velocity
- Midi Value (Channel In/Out, Transposition, Program)
- Midi Quantizing

MIDI files can be edited in the MIDI Editor in five main areas: Piano Roll, Drum Editor, Controller Editor, List Editor and Score Editor.

12 Channel Surround

Sequoia offers comprehensive possibilities to mix audio material into different multi-channel formats up to 12-channel surround. One of the conditions is to use a Mixer with a surround master that is configured according to the target format. Examples of such so-called target formats are 5.0 ITU or 5.1 ITU.

The channels of the surround master can be assigned to any playback devices in the "Project Sound Setup" (Options ->Project Settings -> Mixer Setup -> Surround Master ->Setup) window. The audio material of a VIP can be distributed across any of the available surround busses in the surround panorama by right-clicking on the "Pan" button.

Objects can be routed directly to the surround master and be distributed within the surround panorama irrespective of the track to which they have been assigned.

The surround panorama module offers four different modes for positioning signals within the surround panorama. There are also different surround effects available for mixing in multi-channel format. Sequoia also offers 2-channel surround sound, which can be used for projects that are based on "Dolby Surround ProLogic". A standard stereo audio card and a "Dolby Surround ProLogic"-capable amplifier/receiver are sufficient for working with 2-channel surround sound. n the Mixer of the existing VIP click on the Preset button at the bottom right corner and select "Surround". Right-clicking on the same button again opens the window "Project Mixer setup". In the master section of this dialog you can now select the desired target format (e.g. 5.1 ITU) from a combo box.

CD Mastering

CDs can be burned directly from within the project without having to export the project as a wave file beforehand. Burning requires that a blank disc be inserted into the drive and a valid TOC (Table of Contents) exists. For this, at least one CD track and one CD end marker must be placed.

Set CD tracks

Position the play cursor where you wish to set the CD track marker. The marker menu can be found above the track boxes in the VIP. Open it and select "Set CD Track Index". Repeat this process until all markers that you wish to set are in place. Now position your play cursor where you wish your CD to end. Open the Marker Menu again and select "Set CD End Marker".

Note: The burning process only starts from the first CD Track Marker.

Burn CD

Now play the project again and look in 's status bar to see how much CPU is required to play the project. This is important to estimate at which speed the project can be burned to Audio CD. Now click on the button with the CD symbol. Alternately, you can select the "Make CD..." option in the "CD/DVD" menu. The CD burning dialog now opens.

Make CD

Mode: Here you can select if you wish to burn your project directly "on-the-fly" (without prior rendering) or if Sequoia should create a new file beforehand (bouncing).

Now click on the "Burn CD" button:

CDR write settings: Set the desired burn speed here.

If you wish to use CD text, open the "CD Text/MP3 ID Editor" by clicking on the "CD Text Settings" button and entering the desired CD text for your tracks.

Click on the "Write" button to begin burning. When burning, the play cursor runs through the project and serves as a progress display. After burning, the message appears saying that the burn process is complete. Confirm this by pressing "OK".
